Who’s Ready for a Barn Crawl?

It takes a lot for me to be excited about getting up early on a Saturday, but I am so excited about tomorrow…and my first ever ‘barn crawl’!

What's a ‘barn crawl’ you might ask? Well it’s when you drive out to the country and shop for treasures in barns-turned-home design stores.

The Washington Post recently featured an article about this trend in our area and I couldn’t have been more excited to learn about new vintage inspired home design stores in my neck of the woods (pun intended)!

I can’t wait to share all my treasures with you…wish me luck!!!

Supporting Dreams is Always a Good Investment!

My blog friend Erika Lee Sears is inspiring to me because she embodies the true meaning of Live Love Life Now™. She is a self-taught artist who took the leap of faith to leave the corporate world and pursue her dreams of painting full time.

And if that wasn’t enough, she has also created a kickstarter project in order to fund a two-week artist residency in Hong Kong! I am in full support of Erika and anyone else that goes after their dreams wholeheartedly and have pledged my support.

Perhaps you too will be inspired to help! Check out all the details here.

It's About Time!

I started this blog fourteen months ago in order to have some accountability for changing my life.

It became an outlet for me to share parts of myself that hardly anyone knew – my dreams, my fears, my goals…everything.

For that reason, I kept the blog completely anonymous and only my boyfriend knew of its existence for the first six months. As I grew more comfortable and happy with where the blog was leading me, I started to let my family and friends in.

And now I want to share my story with everyone!

So, for a little more insight into me and why I started this blog in the first place, please check out my newly posted ‘All About Me’ profile – fourteen months in the making!

Petition for Cats in the Workplace

Today is President’s Day in the U.S.

Which means a three-day holiday weekend for me!

I celebrated by sleeping in (of course) and taking it easy in order to recover from an intense 90-minute hot yoga class that I took last night. The class was no joke and I cannot recall another time when I was this sore! The 95-degree heat made it that much more fatiguing but I’m proud of myself for going nonetheless!

Now I’m hanging with the fuzzy kids and trying to motivate myself to be a bit productive in the last few hours of my long weekend. And with a little luck, I’ll have a surprise for you right here tomorrow!

I Wonder What Mine Will Look Like?

Remember when you’d be excited to go to the mailbox and see if you got a handwritten note from a friend away at camp or from family that lived out of town?

Well I do and I miss it!

So when my sister introduced me to PostCrossing – a “project that allows anyone to receive postcards from random places in the world” – I was hooked!

This past Monday I became a member on their website and within minutes had my first international address! With any luck, my new friend in Russia will receive my postcard in a week or two.

I can't wait to see where my first postcard comes from!

I picked up this postcard at MoMA just for the occasion!

SPOTLIGHT ON: Barco’s Nightingales℠ Foundation

My father is one of those people who can make friends wherever he goes.

He’s also one of the most compassionate people I know and his generosity makes me aspire to be a more caring human being.

Two years ago, on behalf of his company Barco Uniforms®, my father and stepmother founded the Barco’s Nightingales℠ Foundation to “support the vitality and courageous heart of nursing, while also dedicating [them]selves to honoring the spirit of those women and men who choose nursing by focusing [their] philanthropic efforts on helping to mend the lives of children and their families.”

I’ve always been proud of my father for all that he does to better the lives of his family, friends and employees everyday, but there are no words to describe how proud I am of his foundation work.

He traveled to Peru last year with the Smile Train on one of their mission trips to better the lives of children through free cleft lip and palate surgery and is currently planning the foundation’s first charity walk this spring alongside RMHC’s Walk for Kids.

His most recent success though has been in partnering Barco Uniforms® with ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and CafePress to launch an online store that makes Grey’s Anatomy scrubs available to fans all over the world and one dollar from each purchase of $25 or more will go to benefit the Nightingales℠ Foundation. As a tribute to the partnership, the February 10th episode included a nod to the Foundation and ABC also produced a corresponding PSA with Eric Dane to generate additional support for the cause.

While I am blown away by all that he has been able to achieve in only two years, I’m never surprised by his successes because nothing can stop my father from accomplishing something that he puts his mind and heart into.

Thank you dad for the continuing lesson that anything can happen if you believe in it enough…and that one person can make a difference. I love you.

Adopt a New Friend at PetSmart!

This weekend, PetSmart Charities®, Purina® Pro Plan® and PetSmart® present thePetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend at all PetSmart® stores in the U.S. and Canada.

I highly recommend that anybody thinking about getting a cat or dog take advantage of this event...or forward the details on to anyone that they know who is looking. There are so many animals that need good homes and PetSmart® is doing a wonderful thing by opening their doors to local animal groups!

And if you can’t make it this weekend, they have three other National Adoption Events already scheduled for the rest of the year:

April 29th – May 1st
September 9th – 11th
November 11th – 13th

And if those aren’t convenient either, try checking out your local PetSmart® on any weekend. Our local store allows area shelters to host adoption events throughout the year - which is how we found Wylie and Sami!!!

eBay is Addictive…In Case You Didn’t Know

eBay is like crack for crafters and collectors alike – because once you start sourcing, it’s really, really, really hard to stop.

Case in point, I have spent a few hours so far on the hunt for the perfect vintage bottles. You see, I’ve had a project in mind to refinish bottles but I only want to use vintage ones because a) they are cheaper and b) they are super cool looking! And since I don’t have a lot of vintage stores close by, I’ve returned to eBay to help me find exactly what I’m looking for.

And so my wish list keeps growing as I track various ‘lots’ of bottles to see who has the best deal. But it’s hard to know when to stop, especially when your searches return close to 25,000 items!

But since these will be used for testing purposes, I’m going to (try to) limit my time to looking through only the first ten pages or so.

I can’t wait to get started though! I haven’t worked on a project in some time and it’s one of my favorite things to do so I’m already excited to see how it turns out.

But don’t worry, you’ll be the first to know the outcome…good or bad!

Quote of the Day

“A good friend is a connection to life – a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world.” - Lois Wyse

Within the last two weeks, I have been blessed to spend time with my closest friends from high school and college – which, of course, makes me nostalgic for the days when we saw each other everyday and were intimately involved in one another’s lives.

Nowadays it’s harder to maintain that daily connection and I often wish that I stayed in better touch. But the true test of friendship is being able to pick up where you left off (even after weeks, months or years) and I am fortunate to have a handful of such friends in my life.

Nevertheless, I still have that dream that someday we'll all live in the same city and can hang out with each other as often as we please...and enjoy one another’s snow ramps.

Petition for Cats in the Workplace

Last weekend, one of my best friends from high school hosted our get together weekend in NYC. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, two dogs and two cats in a classically small New York apartment…and somehow they all get along!

In fact, our shared love of animals is one of the things I adore the most about her and I couldn’t wait to visit her home and play with her adorable four-legged family!

This Monday's post goes out to you, Katie!

Photo Album: NYC Part One

This past weekend in New York was cold and snowy but I’d go back in a heartbeat if it meant getting to spend more time with my friends! We hadn’t all been together since high school and it meant so much to me that we were able to make this trip happen.

And to commemorate the amazing time, I thought I’d share some of my favorite photos with you!
